About the Symposium

With the approval of the State Ministry of Culture, Changchun Municipal People's Government and China National Guiding Committee for Urban Sculpture Construction will co-organize the China Changchun International Sculpture Convention and Sister Cities Sculpture Symposium 2003.

The conference, with the theme of " Friendship, Peace and Spring", will include a topic forum, a non-topic lecture forum, International Sister Cities Sculpture Symposium and an exhibition of sculpture maquettes for group or individual exhibition.

Changchun, the capital of Jilin Province, is a beautiful and lively city in the north east of China. The area covers 20,571 square kilometers and the total population is 7.13 million, of which 2.30 million live in the city itself. Changchun has been enjoying its good reputation of " Automobile City", "Movie City" and " Forest City". Now it is making great efforts to build itself up as a " Sculpture City". Already 282 sculptures representing artistic styles from around the world have been created by 239 well-known sculptors from 84 countries for the city during the course of five sessions of symposia from 1997 to 2001. These elegant works will be permanently displayed in the Changchun World Sculpture Park.

Two books have been published covering the collected works of five sessions of symposia, containing pictures of sculptures, sculptors' biographies, photos of the artists at work and a number of essays. With the distribution of these large, beautifully designed and bound picture books (Chinese-English bilingual edition), a strong and positive influence has been generated within China and abroad. Another two books containing photos of sculpture maquettes and choice essays from five sessions of symposia will be edited and published.

After this session, Changchun will have completed the landscaping for its own World Sculpture Park where sculptures created by sculptors from 100 countries will be placed permanently.

The selected sculptors will be expected to complete their works on site in Changchun between August 9th and September 5th 2003.

We have been looking for proposals with distinctive characteristics showing YOUR local culture, which are made of cast bronze from initial clay or plaster artwork or made of any other material (such as marble, granite), in either realistic or abstract style of a size not to exceed 2 meters relating to the theme of " Friendship, Peace and Spring".

We will provide you with the following if you are selected for the Symposium:

1. Invitation to attend the China Changchun International Sculpture Convention 2003 and its academic forum.
2. Permanent display of your completed sculpture in the Changchun World Sculpture Park.
3. A diploma of honor, picture album, souvenir and allowance of US$ 2000 issued by the Organizing Committee.
4. Tours and sightseeing activities during your stay with us
5. One or two assistants, all materials for your sculpture and processing tools.
6. Reimbursement of a one-time round-trip air ticket to Changchun via Beijing from your country of origin and we will cover your accommodation and board at the hotel adjacent to the work site.
